about

I wanted to write a song about the best advice I've ever had.

I'm fortunate in that many very sensible people have given me lots of good advice over the years. Not exclusively, of course, but the advice people give often has a filter of common sense - people tend not to advise you to do something they know is a bad idea, even if they would do it themselves. Advice, therefore, is generally pretty good if you make sure you ask people who should be wise... at least in the area you are seeking advice for.

One particularly good bit of advice I heard long ago was that there's no point sitting around and waiting for other people to fix things. The street, the town, the country, the world... there are lots of problems that scale-up and seem impossible to tackle. And perhaps they are? However, sitting around and doing nothing is definitely not going to work - you have to roll-up your sleeves and give it a go. If we all left it to others then nothing would get done!

The cover photo is from a debate I had with a number of people I disagree with. One, Jacob Rees-Mogg, is an MP I disagree with to a very strong degree. I could have just got angry with him, but I took him on in public debates and called him out on the nonsense he was spreading.

Did it work? Well, at the time this song was released he was still an MP. Sometimes you fight and you don't win, but one thing is for certain - if you don't fight you will definitely lose.

Don't just wait for change - be the change you want to see in the world.

lyrics

It's easy
to see what's happening to our world
To count the problems we all face
And wonder how we'll cope

It's tiring
Wondering when all those in charge
Will care about us more than wealth
It's tempting to lose hope

But the best advice that was
Ever given to me
Was to be the change in the world
I want to see

It's painful
Life will sometimes beat you up
Throw all it has right in your face
And kick you when you're down

But

It's crucial
To take it all right on the chin
To have support to deal with it
And keep your friends around

But the best advice that was
Ever given to me
Was to be the change in the world
I want to see

Be the one who friends can rely on
Be the one whose shoulder they cry on
Be the one who argues for others
Be the one who stands with your brothers
Be the one who fights oppression
Be the one who resists aggression
Be the one who speaks for the weakest
Be the one there when times are bleakest

It's hopeful
When people say enough's enough
By standing up and speaking out
To choose to get involved

Yeah

Together
We'll change the world in little ways
But all the changes will add up
Until problems are solved

And the best advice that was
Ever given to me
Was to be the change in the world
I want to see

So the best advice I have
To give to you
Is to take these changes on
And see them through
