about

I am quite jealous of 'millennials' and subsequent generations because the accessibility of mobile phones and digital cameras means that they are likely to always have a record of the people that surround them at every stage of life.

In my youth people didn't generally carry cameras, and there was a significant cost to take a photo. This meant that it's something people didn't generally do. There are few photos that exist of my teenage years. There are people I don't have any photos of at all, even significant ones.

You don't always know when you won't have another opportunity to take someone's photo. Make sure you try to take plenty of everyone who is important to you.

lyrics

[spoken]
Faded photograph
A glimpse of more youthful days
Memories linger

You weren't really ready
I caught you off-guard and just a little surprised
Opportune candid moment
A much luckier shot than I first realised

Without plan or intention
A normal second of a typical day
Always thought there'd be others
I couldn't know that you'd soon be taken away

This battered old piece of paper
Only picture I've ever had of you
Images that were once fresh in my mind
Lost to the years only I've lived through

Looking out at me from the faded print
More time has passed since than you spent here
You were the first one that I ever lost
I won't let your memory disappear

You lived for the moment
Youthful energy caught in your prime
Planning for a bright future
You always expected that there'd be more time

Trigger of happy memories
Or painful reminder of fragile lives?
I treasure your picture
Your memory lives while one of us survives

This battered old piece of paper
Only picture I've ever had of you
Images that were once fresh in my mind
Lost to the years only I've lived through

Looking out at me from the faded print
More time has passed since than you were here
You were the first one that I ever lost
I won't let your memory disappear

This battered old piece of paper
Over-exposed, and fading away
Falling apart more as the years go on
My attempt to remember being betrayed

Looking out at me from the faded print
Beautiful eyes that will never age
For so many years I was left broken
Couldn't risk hurt, had to disengage

[ Spoken ]
I don't want to unpack
But it makes me
I don't want to go back
But it takes me
I didn't want to feel
But it wakes me
I just wanted to heal
But it breaks me

This battered old piece of paper
Only picture I've ever had of you
Images that were once fresh in my mind
Lost to the years only I've lived through

Looking out at me from the faded print
More time has passed since than you were here
You were the first one that I ever loved
I won't let your memory disappear
